Summer sales boost for budget fashion chain H&M as sun brings out shoppers

H&M beat forecasts with a 10 per cent rise in July sales following a tough few months.

The cold spring weather had previously caused the worst second quarter sales growth in three years at the fashion retailer.

However, the warmer summer in Europe has helped trading recover.

Jamie Merriman, an analyst at Bernstein, said the sales increase in July were probably due to discounting.

The boost for H&M – a staple of the High Street with ranges designed by singer Beyoncé – comes ahead of official UK retail sales figures later this week.

The report, due to be published by the Office for National Statistics on Thursday, will show how retailers fared in the month after the vote to leave the European Union.

Sales fell at the fastest rate in six months in June with officials blaming the bad weather rather than the looming EU Referendum.

Two weeks ago Next, which is seen as a bellwether for the High Street, posted a better-than-expected 0.3 per cent rise in sales for the three months to the end of July.

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee cut interest rates for the first time since 2009 at the beginning of the month and delivered an emergency package worth up to £170billion to ward off recession following the Brexit vote.

It took me a good five minutes to recognize the blonde model sitting in makeup artist Tom Pecheux's chair backstage at Balmain. I moved closer to get a better look, still confused as Pecheux expertly buffed on concealer and tapped on lipstick and highlighter. It wasn't until the model stood up, looked in the mirror, and exclaimed, "Oh, my God, I'm blonde!" that I realized I had been staring at Kendall Jenner. No, Kendall isn't adopting her younger sister's penchant for wigs. It was all part of Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing's plan for his fall show. "Olivier wanted a surprise on the runway, so we're making some of the blonde models into brunettes and some of the brunettes into blondes," said hairstylist Sam McKnight, who used lace front wigs to achieve the fakeout. That meant Kendall went blonde and Gigi Hadid went brunette, as if the two besties swapped looks for a few hours (Jenner called it the #KenGi swap on Instagram), while other recognizable blondes, like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Devon Windsor, and Lindsey Wixson, went dark and Alessandra Ambrosio swapped her brown hair for a warm golden hue. The anomaly in the group was Karlie Kloss, who went from dark blonde to nearly platinum. "We initially put the dark wig on her and it looked too heavy," explained McKnight, "so the twist was to go for a bleached-blonde shade." It's hard not to think that Rousteing's "surprise" for the show was just as much about social media as it was about the runway. The wigs were practically made for Snapping and selfies, the models enjoying a few hours to show off a new (and temporary) look. Even the makeup seemed to have been planned with Instagram in mind, Pecheux adding soft contours, lots of highlights, mascara, and a pinkish-nude lipstick dabbed on both the lips and eyelids, all of which defined the models' features in a pretty yet subtle ways. And if you don't believe me, just scroll through your Instagram feed and hop on Snapchat for a few moments. The proof is in the postshow selfies.
