Shop The Drop: Street Style Up For Sale

There’s an art to being an It girl. Nabbing next season’s must-have prom dress first is all well and good, but it takes a well-trained eye to turn that dress into an outfit that will get papped all over fashion week and make the best-dressed lists.

But what’s the next step for a street-style sensation? For ultimate It girl Alexa, it’s turning her hand to designing the clothes she’ll be making headlines in. and while we’ll have to wait until 2017 to buy a Chung original, Alexa’s fellow FROW-goers have stolen a march on her, launching their own labels while she’s still at the drawing board.

First up is fellow Brit Harley Viera-Newton, who’s added another slash to her model/DJ mantle: /designer of HVN. Her first collection of vintage-inspired dresses – think cherry, heart and feather-printed silk tea dresses and waisted shifts – has just arrived at Matches.

In the French corner is Parisian blogger/model/designer Jeanne Damas and her label Rouje – your new go-to for simple shapes in luxury fabrics; we’ll be beelining for the red suede jacket and denim miniskirt.

And the Italian contingent? Meet Gilda Ambrosia and Giorgia Tordini, who’ve paired up to create Attico. Their embroidered and embellished robes, going on sale this month, were made to be worn, well, however and wherever you want – try them over anything from jeans to slip dresses, as demonstrated by the design duo.

And that’s the best bit: whoever label you buy into, you’ll never be short of styling inspiration – the It girls will see to that.

Beautiful little girl dresses – perfect for summer – spring from women’s shelter in Bangkok

From a women’s shelter in Bangkok comes beautiful dresses for little girlssold by Menlo Park-based Kasumisou Gallery.

“The dresses are machine made, but the smocking and embroidery are done by hand,” explains Gallery co-owner Mark Rosasco. “An order of nuns, the Good Shepherd Sisters, operate the center where the unique prom dresses are worked on by disadvantaged girls and women who live nearby. The goal is to teach them marketable skills.”

The mantra of the Gallery is “profits with a purpose,” and most of the products are sold online. Mark’s Gallery partner Clare Warner (pictured with dresses) and his wife, Barbara, do get out in the community with the dresses from time to time, as they did recently at the Menlo Park Downtown Block Party, where the quality of the dresses caught this reporter’s eye.

“We had great success with the dresses at the Gamble Garden Tour this spring,” says Clare. “It is hard to get the word out, and the photos online don’t quite convey that the smocking and stitching that goes into each dress.”

The workshop in Bangkok is not large, and only the best sewers get to work on the MarieProm UK. They are paired with Kissy Kissy sweaters, which Mark takes personally overseas.
