Berea-Midpark to feature a "Beauty" of a show this weekend - Middleburg Heights Happenings

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio - The Berea-Midpark Performing Arts will present four performances of the timeless classic, Beauty and the Beast at the high school, 165 East Bagley Road. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. April 24; 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. April 25; and 2:30 p.m. April 26.

I stopped by the school and caught a rehearsal last week. The set and props were a work-in-progress and the actors were running through the scenes without their elaborate costumes. The directors kept turning to me and saying, "you have to use your imagination - there's going to be a grand entranceway there" or "we're wheeling her around in an office chair because her costume will be on wheels with only her head showing". While those pieces of the production were being worked on, the cast was fine tuning their parts. Most parts are double-casted and so every scene was runned through twice, giving each actor an opportunity to rehearse (and me a chance to capture a picture of several cast members). The production features many strong and talented voices and I found myself laughing out loud at the funny parts.

The musical is a collaboration of the Music Department, Drama Club, Art Department, and Thespians. The production is co-directed by Berea-Midpark High School Choir Director Catherine Robison-Ranney and her husband, Dr. Todd Ranney, of Mansfield University, and assisted by Technical Director Marj Sirocky. The orchestra pit, made up of mostly Berea-Midpark High School students, will be conducted by Orchestra Director Lisa Cheshier. New to production staff is choreographer Audrey Sycz. The set was designed by Berea-Midpark art teacher, Jim Bycznski.

Seats for all performances are $10 per person. Reserved seating is available by visiting the Performing Arts website at berea.midparkstage.com. General admission seating will be available at the door.

A Mother's Day tribute: Local violinist, Mary Beth Ions, will perform her one-woman show with music honoring mothers and women of all ages. With more than twenty years' experience, Ion has been an active performer, which includes her participation in the Opera Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Trinity Cathedral Chamber Orchestra, as well as several Playhouse Square productions of touring Broadway shows. Beginning at 7 p.m. April 27, you are invited to enjoy her wit as much as her beautiful music. Registration is required and can be done in person, online at cuyahogalibrary.org or by phone at 440-234-3600. Thank you to the Friends of the Middleburg Heights Library for sponsoring this program.

Cutting out the clutter: Spring is always a good time for a little cleaning and the Berea-Midpark High School Orchestra wants to encourage you to clean out your closets, which in turn, will benefit them. The group is holding an Easter Seals Fundraiser from 5-8 p.m. April 24 and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 25 in the Berea-Midpark High School Parking lot, 165 East Bagley Road in Berea, where they will be collecting new and used items to fill an Easter Seals truck. The more items that are donated to fill the truck will mean more cash Easter Seals will donate to the Orchestra. Some examples of items that will be accepted include clothing, shoes, purses, coats and bedding.

What a waste: In keeping with the spring cleaning theme, the Middleburg Heights Service Center has scheduled a waste roundup for city residents. The Household Hazardous Waste Roundup will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27, at the service center located at 7375 Engle Road. Residents may drop off everything from old paint to car batteries. For a complete list, click here. Residents participating in this event are encouraged to bring donations of food or other items to support the Middleburg Heights Food Pantry and Scan Hunger Center.
