AZ Storytellers fashion night at Phoenix Art Museum, 3/4

Join The Republic for "Stories of a Stylish Life" as we take over the Phoenix Art Museum to celebrate the Valley's most stylish citizens as part of the Arizona Storytellers Project.

The evening is a partnership with the Arizona Costume Institute's Nouveau chapter. We'll hear from fashionistas, models and retailers as we celebrate fashion, beauty and self-expression.

Featured speakers include Dennita Sewell, curator of fashion design at the Phoenix Art Museum; Sheree Hartwell, owner of the Ford Robert Black Agency; stylist and model Maggie Heiser; retired custom bridal designer Francesca Bianco; Barney's New York display manager John Stevens; Nouveau chapter founder Celine Rille; stylist Oscar de la Salas; and Galina Mihaleva, costume designer at Arizona State University's School of Film, Dance and Theatre.

Galina Mihaleva

Sewell will talk about how she got her start, and some of the mistakes she made along the way. Rille will share how a college boyfriend helped her develop her signature style. Learn what Bianco (mother of pizza maestro Chris) learned the time she saw Rose Kennedy walk past Gloria Swanson, who was rumored to be sleeping with Kennedy's husband.

All Republic and azcentral.com subscribers receive a complimentary brownie from Fairytale Brownies at check-in.

American Sign Language interpretation will be provided by student volunteers.

Tickets include appetizers. A full cash bar is available. Proceeds from this event will be used to support The Republic's journalism training and education programs.

Admission to the museum is free on this night ("Fashioned in America" is on exhibit), but storytelling is a ticketed event.

How to choose the perfect venue for your nuptials

How to choose the perfect venue for your nuptials

Knowing what type of ceremony you would be having will highlight the area in which you should look for a wedding venue.

He popped the question, you said yes... now it's time to plan the wedding and choose the right venue for the ceremony.

Before you rush off and start looking around every single wedding reception venue within a hundred miles, here are some important tips to consider when choosing a wedding venue:

Talk about it: Consult with your future spouse about the kind of wedding you would like and be prepared to compromise if you have different ideas; this could help avoid disagreements later! Are you looking for an outdoor wedding in a marquee, a relaxed or contemporary garden wedding venue or a formal and elegant country house?

What kind of wedding are you having? Knowing what type of ceremony you would be having will highlight the area in which you should look for a wedding venue, because your wedding reception venue should ideally be within a 20 – 25 minute radius of the church.

Have a budget: It's important to work out a budget early on to help you short list potential wedding venues. Wedding catering and alcohol normally take up quite a large chunk of your budget so remember to include it in your calculations.

What's convenient for wedding guests? Put into consideration your guests who will be travelling to your wedding. If you want to avoid incurring expensive taxi charges and hotel bills for them or for you, look for a wedding venue near to where the majority of your guests live.

How many guests are you inviting? You need to have a rough idea of guest numbers before you start looking for a wedding venue or be prepared to alter your guest list. This should avoid the disappointment of visiting a beautiful wedding venue only to find out it is too big/small for your wedding.

Wedding date: Once you’ve decided on a date for your wedding and it’s set in stone, check the availability of that date before you visit. If you’re flexible about the day of the week, month, season, or even the year of your wedding you’ll have a much wider choice of venues.

Get professional advice: Checking different wedding websites is very useful because they have details of a wide range of wedding venues at your fingertips. If you'd like some assistance searching for a venue, a wedding venue finding service can help; tell them your requirements and they will search for a venue to suit you from their extensive list of wedding venues – many of which will be privately-owned. Wedding planners can also help you choose a wedding venue as they have experience of weddings at different venues.
